CROP Hunger Walk
For the sixth year First Congregational Church is proud to sponsor the Cape Cod CROP Hunger Walk to raise funds to fight food insecurity here on the Cape and around the country and the world. We have been walking since the early COVID- 19 Pandemic and now have been joined by other churches across the Cape.
CROP Hunger Walks have been raising funds to fight hunger since 1969. The funds they raise are used in local communities, and in the work of Church World Service where they help develop sustainable food resources in underserved communities, provide emergency relief and long term stability to communities impacted by natural disasters, and provide support and services for displaced peoples.
Unfortunately, the number of people facing both food insecurity and starvation continues to grow. Economic factors, continued political conflicts and the effects of climate change continue to have devastating effects on the world food supply. Food insecurity on the Cape continues to grow, as well. In our community the Wellfleet Food Pantry has seen continued growth in the number of families in need.
This year our walk takes on more importance and urgency! Changes in policy at the federal level, work stop orders, and suspension of federal funding have drastically disrupted several large Church World Service programs. According to CWS, “This is a heartbreaking setback for CWS and the families that are counting on us.” Facing a massive gap in funding to meet the basic needs of its program participants, CWS has asked us to begin fundraising as soon as possible.
You can support us with a donation here on the church’s website or visit our table at the Wellfleet Farmer’s Market or the Wellfleet Maker’s Market. Best yet, visit our website, crophungerwalk.org/capecod, and sign up to walk with us! According to Church World Service “Now more than ever, we need you to stand with us. Your CROP Hunger Walk can keep hope alive.” Thank you for your support.
